Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited, India’s largest pharmaceutical company, manufactures and markets world class generics, branded generic pharmaceuticals and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). It is ranked amongst the top ten generic companies worldwide.

From a small domestic company at its inception, it has grown formidably to be a billion dollar institution that was envisioned by the Late Dr Parvinder Singh, ex-Chairman and Managing Director, Ranbaxy. The Company was incorporated in 1961 and went public in 1973. Ranbaxy’s manufacturing strengths have established it as a producer of world-class generics, branded genericsand a major supplier of its range of APIs. 

Since its inception, Ranbaxy has been growing consistently from strength to strength. In 1985, Ranbaxy Research Foundation was established and in 1987 production start-up at the modern APIs plant at Toansa ( Punjab) made Ranbaxy the country’s largest manufacturer of antibiotics/ antibacterials.

In 1997, Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited crossed a sales turnover of Rs 10,000 million, with its exports reaching an all time high of Rs 5,000 million. The company made its presence felt internationally when it entered the USA in 1998, the world’s largest pharmaceuticals market, with products under its own name. In 2001, Ranbaxy USA crossed sales of US $ 100 million, thus becoming the fastest growing company in the US.

The Board of Directors run the company, make all the strategic decisions and provide an able direction to the company. The Board includes members like Dr. Brian W. Tempest, CEO and Managing Director; Mr. Tejendra Khanna, Chairman, Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd.; Mr. Malvinder Mohan Singh, President Pharmaceuticals and Executive Director and Mr. Vinay. K. Kaul Director, Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd.

Ranbaxy products are sold in over 100 countries with manufacturing operations in seven countries and ground presence in 44. For the twelve months ending December 31, 2004, Global Sales at US $1174 million registered a growth of 21%. The Company has an expanding international portfolio of affiliates, joint ventures and representative offices across the globe with joint ventures/subsidiaries in USA, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Ireland, Netherlands, India, China, Brazil, South Africa, Japan, et al.

While Ranbaxy aggressively pursues the internationalization of its business, the growth strategy equally focuses on enhancing the market share in India. The company has a strong brand marketing team and distribution network in India. In 2003, the company developed and launched five new products in the domestic market, in the area of Oral Controlled Release Systems, using its patented ‘Platform Technologies.’ In the same year, 39 new products and line extensions were delivered for the domestic market.

It is one of the largest investor on R&D in the Indian pharmaceutical industry with an R&D spending of 7% of its sales during 2004. The Company's major research focus is in the areas of urology, anti-infectives, respiratory, anti-inflammatory and metabolic disorders segments. To accelerate its research programme, Ranbaxy has joined hands with GlaxoSmithKline for a global alliance in the area of drug discovery and development.

The allied businesses of Ranbaxy include Ranbaxy's Animal Health Division , Ranbaxy Fine Chemicals Ltd. and Ranbaxy Diagnostics.
