India sees tourism boom, up 7.3%

Foreign tourist arrivals in India rose 7.3 percent in July 2005 from the previous year, as tourism slowly revived amid a booming economy and a peace process with Pakistan.

According to a government statement issued on 4 th August, India had 288,921 foreign visitors in July 2005, compared with 269,171in 2004. Foreign exchange earnings also rose 11 percent to $463.67 million.

India, Asia's third largest economy, has been trying to push tourism through a high-profile campaign, called "Incredible India," which showcases everything from the ski slopes in Jammu and Kashmir state to spiritual and adventure tourism destinations.

Government officials say tourist arrivals crossed three million for the first time in 2004.
