ON Semiconductor, Nantero in nanotechnology JV

Power solutions maker ON Semiconductor Corporation and nanotechnology company Nantero Inc. have come together to develop a new semiconductor process technology using carbon nanotubes.

ON Semiconductor said the new project will be located at its newly acquired Gresham, Oregon, manufacturing facility, which it bought from LSI Logic Corp. in April. It had hired most of the facility's workers, including its in-house engineering team.

Nantero is a known player in the nanotechnology domain and develops semiconductors using nanotubes for consumer electronics and other devices.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. A carbon nanotube is considered as a possible replacement for conventional materials used in the making of semiconductors.

The joint venture will develop technology for commercializing carbon nanotube technology in a standard CMOS fabrication process. Greg Schmergel, Nantero's co-founder and chief executive officer, the venture should result in the production of the world's first semiconductor devices using carbon nanotubes.

Nantero's proprietary processes for the use of carbon nanotubes are CMOS-compatible and are being developed at the Gresham facility even when it was owned by LSI Logic.
