NIPER to house region’s first nanotech drug laboratory

The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) in Mohali is set to house North India’s first full-fledged nanotechnology toxicity laboratory where the toxicity of newly-developed drugs can be tested.

“At present National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) is fully competent in the diagnosis of toxicity of new drugs and delivery aspects and the upcoming nanotechnology-aided lab would mean state-of-the-art upgradation of its facilities and widening the scope of the tests,” National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) director Prof. Dr. P. Rama Rao told Newsline.

It is under a special programme launched by the Union Government’s Department of Biotechnology (DBT) that the nanotechnology toxicity laboratory would be set up at NIPER.

“This laboratory would further enhance the efficacy of the toxicity diagnosis NIPER is already doing,” said DBT secretary M.K. Bhan.

While a formal sanction of the laboratory from the department is likely in the next few weeks, funding for it would be in project type mode, said sourcesat NIPER.

“NIPER would receive funds as per the projects we undertake, but there could also be some funding assistance to upgrade our facilities by adding high-end diagnosis equipment,” said a senior faculty member.

The department has plans to launch a country-wide drive to upgrade the existing infrastructure in research and development in the field of life sciences.

“Research in life sciences in North India have not picked up as expected due to a general absence of facility upgradation, team work and innovative spirit. There is great scope for nanotechnology-added research in this part of the country,” said Bhan when he was at NIPER recently.
