Government to focus on nanotech

Government is focusing on nanotechnology as one of the thrust areas for future research and development and funds for the nanotechnology programme are expected to go up to over Rs. 500 crore in the next five years.

"During the period 1999-2000 to 2003-2004, the Department of Science and Technology has provided funds to the extent of around Rs. 125 crore for the nanoscience technology initiative," Union Minister for Science and technology Kapil Sibal said on February 22 at the inauguration of the Indo-US Nanotechnology Conclave.

"It is expected that the funds for the programme will increase substantially to over Rs. 500 crore in the next five years and in particular, special emphasis will be on technology development aspects," he said.

Sibal said that about 40 institutions in the country were engaged in R and D in nanotechnology. However, while in US and Europe high-tech start-up companies dominate the nanotechnology market, such companies do not exist in India.

The minister said international cooperation was essential in nanotechnology research as it can lead to better focus and overcoming knowledge gaps.

A recent realistic evaluation of the global nanotechnolgy market indicates that the total market is likely to increase from the present seven billion dollar to over 28 billion dollar in 2008.
