Hilton to manage Empee Hotels' new venture

Hilton International, a leading hotel chain of the U.K.-based Hilton group, has entered into an agreement with Empee Hotels to manage and operate the latter's luxury hotel to be established in Chennai.

Koos Klein, President, Hilton International (Middle East & Asia Pacific), said the hotel industry in Chennai was shaping up to be one of the most dynamic in India, with occupancy levels at the top-end of the market posting strong gains.

With multinationals in the automobile sector having manufacturing facilities and flourishing information technology and outsourcing businesses in the Chennai region, the hotel industry in this region would witness accelerated growth in the coming years, Mr. Klein said.

According to M. P. Purushothaman, Chairman, Empee Group, the 253-room property to be christened `Hilton Chennai', will be located in the Guindy Industrial Estate (Ekkattuthangal). The outlay on the project was estimated at Rs. 184 crore, to be financed with an equity component of Rs. 55 crore and debt of Rs. 129 crore.

Nisha Purushothaman, Managing Director, Empee Hotels, said construction would start shortly and hoped the hotel would be ready for occupation by December 2007. Wimberley Allison Tong & Goo (WATG), a leading global design team behind some world's most iconic hotels had designed the property.

Hilton is already managing Trident Hilton in Chennai, owned by the Oberois on a franchise basis. Hilton has signed management contracts for three new properties in India — a 300-room new generation Hilton Hotel and a 250-room Hilton Residences in Bangalore and a 100-villa holistic lifestyle retreat in Shillim (located in the Western Ghats).
