More funds for biotech research: Budget

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram announced more allocation for biotechnological research, even as the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology in Kerala was accorded the status of autonomous national institute.

Saying that "biotechnology is the new frontier that India will conquer," Chidambaram proposed a Rs.521 crore (Rs.5.21 billion) outlay, an increase of Rs.76 crore over the previous year, to boost research in the field.

The finance minister said the funds would be utilised for programmes aimed at agriculture, animal sciences, aquaculture, basic research, biodiversity, bioresources, bioprospecting, environment, product and process development in biotechnology.

Health care would remain the main focus of biotechnology products and processes, Chidamabaram said.

On the biotechnology institute of Kerala, the finance minister said the decision had been taken at the behest of the science and technology ministry.

Elaborating on the plans for the institute, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said it would be scaled up to undertake more research work including training more young scientists and helping them do their doctorate studies.

Considering the interest from overseas universities and institutions to join hands with their Indian counterparts to undertake research and product development, Sibal said enhancing facilities in various institutions would help to train more manpower required for such collaborations.
