Singapore eyes Punjab tourists

Singapore Tourism will target the Punjab market as the purchasing power of the people of Punjab is high and also because people from the region often travel abroad, Siew Kheng Kang, regional director (South Asia, Middle East and Africa) for Singapore Tourism said at a function in Ludhiana on April 14.

In 2005, Singapore had 8.94 million tourists, registering a 7.3 per cent growth from 2004. Speaking to Business Standard, Siew said visitor arrivals from Punjab to Singapore had seen a robust growth of 52 per cent in 2005, with around 6,000 people visiting Singapore last year.

"This is part of a growing trend of the importance of Punjab to Singapore. The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) is committed to increasing traffic from the state and expects double-digit growth in 2006 as well

He said the huge number of arrivals in 2005 could be attributed to several factors. 2005 witnessed several major BTMICE (business travel, meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions) events such as the 117th International Olympics Committee (IOC) session, Communic Asia and International Textile and Machinery Association (ITMA) Asia Exhibition.

Speaking of their upcoming projects, Siew said the New Palawan Beach, a family oriented coastline, would undergo a $11-million facelift and would be ready by mid 2006.

"Even the $-50 million Siloso Beach Resort with 174 sea-facing rooms, 15 villas and a guest tree house will be ready in the mid of this year. A few other resorts, with an investment of Singapore $ 3 billion, will also be ready by 2010. Another priority for us this year, and in the coming years as well, is to demonstrate to Indian companies that Singapore provides a powerful proposition of value-enhancement to their businesses, their employees and their partners. Indian businesses will find that holding their meetings in Singapore or coming to attend conventions and exhibitions means that they are tapping the strengths offered by Singapore as a financial and commercial hub.''
