Spain out to net Indian tourists

‘Smile, you are in Spain’ goes the line on the tourism brochure. Spain would like more of those smiles flashed on Indian faces.

‘Smile, you are in Spain’ goes the line on the tourism brochure. Spain would like more of those smiles flashed on Indian faces.

For starters, a tourism office, consulate and a trade and commercial office will be set up in Mumbai in 2007.

And that’s not all. “ India is high on our agenda,” said Enrique Ruiz de Lara, Director (SE Asia, Australia, New Zealand and India), National Tourist Office of Spain.

“At present, Indian tourists to Spain are low in numbers. We want to turn it around.”

A research on the image and positioning of Spain among 1000 Indian tourists will be taken up in the first phase of the promotion.

He said the Indian tourist would be targeted across three categories — the business traveller, the upscale leisure traveller and the golf enthusiast. Spain has nearly 250 golf courses. Mr de Lara said film tourism was another sector in which Spain proposed to have ties with India. “We are talking to a couple of Bollywood producers,” he said.
