Aviation to travel, Sahara sets sail

Just two months after selling Air Sahara to Jet Airways, the Sahara India Pariwar announced on March 9 that it is entering the travel business with the launch of what it says will be the country's largest travel & tourism company, Sahara Global.

The company will cater to the travel needs of individuals, corporates and small businesses and will also eventually manage hotel properties. Its seven business verticals include travel (outbound, inbound and domestic), conferences, exhibitions, medical tourism and a travel portal for e-commerce and online inventory distribution.

Speaking on the occasion, managing worker & chairman of the Sahara India Pariwar Subrata Roy said the company will harness the vast tourism potential of India.

The Sahara Global CEO Romi Datta said they will transform travel services in a manner that PCOs changed STD calling. People wishing to travel can walk into a Sahara Zone -- in their neighbourhood, on the internet or through the travel agent.

According to Mr Datta, the Indian traveller is grossly under-serviced and the Sahara group plans to market its services via the intranet with hotel and flight booking option engine for B2B and B2C modes. The marketing, sales, distribution and services logistic network is backed by a V-Sat network that covers 1,420 Sahara offices.

Sahara Global also plans to market hotels in domestic destinations under its own brand. These will also be distributed oversees through its proposed alliances with global inventory distributors. Sahara Global will begin managing hotel properties across the country.

Sahara Global Experience Zones will be the cornerstone of Sahara Global reach through outlets where travellers can experience their vacation, make choices, make bookings and work out itineraries with the entire chain of travel, lodging, boarding, sight-seeing planned, organised and booked.

The company is targeting a turnover of Rs 200 crore in its first year which it intends to double over the next three years.
