India outstripping world tourism growth

India's growth in its tourism market has far outstripped the world average increase during 2004 and 2005.

This was stated by Amitabh Kant, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, at the Sixth Annual India Tourism and Heritage Summit, organized by CII in New Delhi on December 20.

In 2004, India's tourism industry had grown by 24 percent in volume terms; and by 26 percent in value terms. The figures from Jan-Oct in 2005 also indicated a similar pattern.

Amitabh Kant was speaking at a closing plenary at the Tourism Summit titled 'Marketing Incredible India to India and the world'.

The biggest challenge for the country's tourism industry today was to convert India into a year-on tourism destination. For this, India must be able to expand and grow its market with new areas and states. Opening up of the vast tourist hinterland in new states will add to the growth momentum for the tourism industry, he said.

The Ministry of Tourism had launched new campaigns which had proved effective in growing awareness about the India market. The Incredible India campaign which had now been on for two years, has recently been followed up with a Atihi Devo Bhava campaign to build stake-holders at the grass-roots level, for the tourism sector. The Union Tourism Ministry was working with the states as well, to create unique experiences at world heritage sites in India.
