World Cup on SMS by Airtel

Bharti Airtel Limited on May 24 announced a tie-up with sports network company ESPN to enable Indian fans access and follow all the matches of the Soccer World Cup in Germany from June 9 to July 9.

Announcing the details, Bharti's Director (Marketing and Communications) Hemant Sachdev said breaking news, fixture listings, half time and full-time scores, penalties and injuries would be available via SMS.

"Also, an Airtel customer may choose to receive SMS alerts of their favourite team's progress in the world cup, such as goal or score updates," he said.

Following the deal with mobile ESPN, Airtel customers would have access to sports centre, a programme providing 2 minute and 30 second clips featuring daily bulletins and coverage of top sports stories from around the world.

The telecom giant would also provide its customers an opportunity to access 150-second preview clips on every World Cup match in Germany, he said.

There will also be contests for subscribers on the cup.

Airtel would also put up giant screens in the commercial and residential areas of the city to beam the world cup matches live.

K Srinivas, Director, East Hub (Mobility) of Bharti, said seven new recharge vouchers would be launched here soon that would bring down the charge for Airtel-to-Airtel calls to 30 paise per minute, while calls from Airtel to other mobiles would be as low as 40 paise per minute.

The company would also give away Adidas T-shirts to its new post paid customers during the world cup.
