MBT may buy BPO, to invest Rs 300 cr

Mahindra British Telecom (MBT), one the largest telecom solutions providers globally, today said it might make a strategic acquisition in the business process outsourcing arena.

“We intend to make strategic acquisitions in niche areas. This is expected to provide us with domain knowledge and expertise in related fields. BPO could be one arena where we might acquire an existing company to provide support services to our clients,” said MBT’s managing director and CEO, Vineet Nayyar.

“MBT has recently acquired Axes, a company engaged in providing solutions for telecom equipment-makers. This has provided MBT access to domain knowledge in related fields. Similar acquisition is not being ruled out,” he added. He, however, clarified that there is nothing on the card as of now.

In a parallel development, MBT has now decided to invest Rs 300 crore in its five development centres over the next couple of years, including the one being set up in Kolkata. “We have ear-marked half of this investment at Rs 150 crore for the Kolkata development centre,” said Nayyar.

The telecom service provider has also decided to recruit 7,000 additional engineers, by 2007-08, for all its five development centres. At present MBT employs 8,000-odd engineers and it intends to recruit another 2,000 next year.
