Fashion has a strong presence in Surat as more and more people from this diamond city are becoming fashion conscious. This new trend has necessitated a demand for fashion designers, who were less in number for the last 10 years.

At the same time, students like to go for fashion designing courses with increasing number, says Chetan Bharucha, Co-ordinator at National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) at Piplod.

In the last ten years, the city has seen a 90 to 95 percent increase in the number of students selecting syllabus of fashion designing.

The city offers huge job opportunity in boutique, sample designing, dyeing and printing houses, production and marketing segment of fashion and garment industry or in computerized fashion designing.

Now all the city needs is a better infrastructure and more fashion shows for fledgling fashion designers to give them chance to display their know-how, says Niharika Tyagi, a Counsellor at National Institute of Fashion Design (NIFD).
