Growth: The industry would expand by 25-30 percent this business year to March 2006 and by 25 percent a year over the next five years.

Job creation/ Recent Developments: There will be huge demand for pilots, cabin crew, maintenance engineers and ground staff in the coming years.

The Indian Airlines has been mandated to buy 43 new aircraft. The airline wants to hire 200 pilots, 400 cabin crew and 300 maintenance engineers. Air-India expects government approval soon to buy 68 new aircraft. Post expansion, the airline may have to hire 100 pilots every year, besides 2,000 cabin crew and 1,000 engineers to maintain the airline’s fleet.

Kingfisher has recently decided to buy 50 more airlines. The carrier should hire nearly 500 pilots in the next five years, besides 1,500 cabin crew. Jet is expected to hire nearly 600 pilots, 2,200 cabin crew and 800 engineers over a five-year period. Air Sahara, Go, Paramount, Air Deccan, Spice Jet are also expected to hire a considerable number of skilled manpower in the coming years.

Industry statement: India's rapidly expanding air travel industry is likely to need USD$50 billion in investment in planes and infrastructure over the next decade to cope with rising demand, Praful Patel, the civil aviation minister said recently at the Dubai Air Show. "The investment in this sector is going to be one of the highest in the country," Patel told reporters. "We will see investments of more than USD$30 billion by 2012 and USD$50 billion in 10 years."

Travel & Tourism

Growth: Indian tourism grew by 25% in volume (tourist arrivals) and 36% in value (in U.S. Dollars terms) in 2004-2005. The National Geographic Traveler has described India as “ Land of Mystery and Majesty” and Forbes says that “ India is now one of the world’s fastest growing travel markets.” According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), tourism in India is estimated to grow at 8.8% ahead of China over the next 10 years.

India is now one of the world’s fastest growing markets – in both directions. Revenue from traveling to India is expected to reach U.S. $ 6 billion this year and to grow to U.S.$24 billion by 2015. Indians traveling abroad are expected to spend U.S.$25 billion this year and U.S.$63 billion by 2015.

Job creation: In India tourism is providing employment to over 25 million people and with proper planning, this figure could easily double in 10 years reaching 100 million mark in the next 15 to 20 years.

It is estimated that one out of every nine new jobs around the world will be a tourism related job and one new job will be created in every 2.4 seconds every day for the next several years.

Retailing Industry

Size of the Industry: According toCII, the organized retailing in India is expected to touch Rs1,10,000 crore by 2010. The development of organized retailing in India will benefit as much as 72 percent of the population as it will bring increased employment, efficiency in agriculture and increased exports.

Growth: According to a study by Economic Times Intelligence, the Confederation of Indian Industry and Tata Strategic Management Group, organised retail sales in India were Rs. 135 billion in 2000 and are estimated to grow to Rs 460 billion by the year 2005.

Job creation: An additional 8 million jobs will be generated in India through direct and indirect employment through the development of organized retail.

Retailers are also trying out smaller versions of their stores in an attempt to reach a maximum number of consumers. Crossword bookstores is experimenting with Crossword Corner, to increase reach and business from their stores. FoodWorld is experimenting with a format of one-fourth the normal size called FoodWorld Express

Industry statement: Commenting on the findings of the study, PWC Partner Global Retail and Consumer Leader Jaques-Etienne de T’Serclaes said, “By 2020, India will have the lead in this sector. The demographics of this country is such that nothing can stop it from becoming the leader.”
