Regulations for foreign education providers

Consistent with the National Policy on Education, the government intends to provide a regulatory framework in regard to foreign education providers in the country, Minister of State for Human Resource Development M A A Fatmi informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

In order to ensure that quality of education is not adversely affected, the revised ‘regulations for entry and operation of foreign university/institutions imparting technical education in India’ have been notified on May 27, 2005 by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), he said in a written reply.

The minister said according to the information furnished by the University Grants Commission, 343 universities and 17,625 colleges existed in the country as on March 31, 2005. Fatmi said there was no separate policy notified for education sector with regard to permitting FDI.
